Philly chess players return with 78 awards (and counting) from PA State Scholastic Chess Championships

After weathering the storm on Friday, March 2nd, ASAP Chess made it to Gettysburg, PA to compete in the PA Scholastic Chess Championship! Not only did more than 115 students from Philadelphia attend, but students had to make room for more than 78 awards on the bus trip back! The trip also included a lot of new faces, including first time states competitors, A.S. Jenks, Lincoln and Community Academy!

Thanks to the support of Lindy Communities, ASAP/After School Activities Partnerships was able to sponsor these students from Philadelphia School District-run and public charters to an event that paves the way each year to Nationals. As ratings are being updated, below is an overview of a few noteworthy individual and team awards from different traditional neighborhood public, citywide admission, and special admission schools:

 

Individual Awards:

  • Srisa Changlokar (4th Place Overall K-12 Open) from J. R. Masterman School
  • Amy Huang (2nd Place U1100) from Academy at Palumbo
  • Kayla Cooke (2nd Place U1000 and the 2nd Place U900) from Mitchell Elementary  
  • Nerissa Kuan (1st place U800) and Mario Marchetti (1st Place U600)  from Bregy Elementary
  • Ricardo Lugardo Jr. (7th place 7-12 U1000) from Lincoln High School
  • Delano Kirton (5th place 7-12 Unrated) from Dobbins Career & Technical High School

  • Jr. Mastmeran School (1st place school K-6 Open; 1st place school K-8 Open; 1st place school K-12 Open)

  • Central High School (2nd place school K-12 Open)
  • Academy at Palumbo (2nd place school 7-12 U1300)
  • Carver High School for Engineering & Science (3rd place school 7-12 U1000)
