The 9Queens Chess Academy is led by Jennifer Shahade, two-time women's United States chess champion, and will feature instruction to help female chess players improve their game. The Chess Academy is open to girls participating in the Philadelphia Youth Chess Challenge and Philly Girls Play Chess clubs and their coaches and parents. Saturday Chess Challenge Tournament

ASAP’s last of 4 competitive Saturday Chess Challenge Tournaments is open to Scholastic competitors of all ages, and will feature K-5, K-8, and K-12 sections for both non-rated and USCF rated players. Registration for the tournaments begins at 8:30am and competition starts at 10:00am. Four or five rounds of play will be followed by an award ceremony to honor the top players of the day.

Philly Plays Scrabble Event

Event: 2:30pm-4:30pm

All of ASAP's Philly Plays Scrabble clubs are invited to attend the winter school Scrabble event, held in the Atrium of the School District's Headquarters. Students will engage in a friendly Scrabble competition with their peers from throughout the city.

There will be three age divisions: Elementary (3rd-5th graders); Middle (6th-8th graders) and High School. Elementary and Middle school players will play in pairs, while High Schoolers will play as individuals.

This event will also serve as the kick-off and the first round in the Scholastic Scrabble League, new this year for ASAP high School Scrabble clubs (Interested high schools will compete in bi-weekly round robin tournaments at Carver HS of Engineering and Science).

MLK Family Chess Day

ASAP/After School Activities Partnerships and the African American Museum of Philadelphia will host a Family Chess Day on Saturday, January 16th. In the spirit of Dr. King's philosophy of non-violence, ASAP's Philadelphia Youth Chess Challenge student players want to honor his memory by showing that playing chess after school is a safe, enriching positive alternative to violence. Chess Challenge students invite family, friends, guardians or caregivers to play chess for peace on MLK weekend. People new to the game will have an opportunity to learn as well.

Special guests include Congressman Chaka Fattah and Mr. Kenneth Salaame, Philadelphia Freedom Fighter.

MLK Day of Service

ASAP will be participating in the 15th Annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service by leading trainings for new ASAP chess and Scrabble club leaders.

The training will take place at Girard College, which has been chosen as the hub for this year’s day of service campaign. ASAP will be one of many local organizations running volunteer related activities at Girard College on the 18th. It is a wonderful way to attend an ASAP training (required to lead an ASAP chess or Scrabble club) and also be a part of a larger collective effort.

Participants will also receive a free lunch and an MLK Day of Service t-shirt.

The Eagles Youth Partnerships sponsors its annual all-day chess tournament for more than 200 of Philadelphia’s most competitive school-age students from ASAP’s Philadelphia Youth Chess Challenge, with a special awards ceremony in the Eagles locker room. Chess Challenge students also will have an opportunity to flex their chess muscles in scrimmage games against several Philadelphia Eagles players. In addition, this year’s tournament will feature a chess simul with local chess expert Chris Miller playing 15 students at one time.
